The Quietus Album of the Week“Hamilton thrives at exploring the textures possible when blending acoustic instrumentation and technology, particularly in the album’s swarming, often overwhelming, tone clusters and his vocal shifts [...] That is what makes Versionland so surreal – its pure embrace and acceptance of the unexplainable.”
-Vanessa Ague, The Quietus

Versionland is a new album by composer Jamie Hamilton and contemporary chamber group Phaedra Ensemble.

It is a prismatic collection of songs and fragments about 'The Hum’ – an unexplained sound reported by people in certain geographic locations.

Versionland fuses instrumental music, text, and sound design into an expansive satire on catastrophe and transformation. Through maximalist, genre-weirding arrangements, and overlapping streams of language, it imagines The Hum as a malign force destroying the world.

Drawing from thousands of pages of enthusiasts' explorations of The Hum found in obscure corners of the internet – re-enactments, recording experiments, and conspiracy theories – Hamilton used early neural network technology to process and reimagine these texts. Collaborating with Phaedra Ensemble, he transformed this material into a series of scored pieces, improvisations, and experimental recordings.

Through machine listening – a technology that allows computers to interpret and reimagine sounds – the recordings were reconstructed into dataset facsimiles, creating bizarre instrumental and vocal masses that splinter and mutate. Each iteration of this process fed back into new performances, transcriptions and transformations, blurring the line between human interpretation and technological intervention. The resulting album is a darkly humorous fever-dream on paranoia and internet-age mythology.
Versionland was supported using public funding by the National Lottery
through Arts Council England, and was made possible by Sound and Music's
New Voices programme.

With thanks to the Marchus Trust and the Vaughan Williams Foundation for additional funding.

	Versionland (2023)
A video opera
NB. This is about the multimedia version of Versionland. For the forthcoming updated album version, please see here.

Premiere: 20th February 2023, Cafe OTO, London.

Versionland is a video opera telling stories written by an artificial intelligence about the creation and destruction of the world by a sound known as ‘The Hum’.

The Hum is a disputed acoustic phenomenon that happens in many places throughout the world, in which hearers claim to hear an unexplained, untraceable sound. Versionland takes as its influence the myriad responses people have to The Hum - re-enactments, recording experiments, conspiracy theories, spoofs, and bad jokes.

Hamilton began developing the project through browsing dark web forums, old Yahoo mailing lists
and other forgotten corners of the internet, where he encountered thousands of pages of
enthusiasts’ exploration of The Hum. He downloaded these, and trained an AI upon this material,
generating texts, ideas, experiments and profane ramblings.

After sifting through this digital detritus, he developed the work through a series of recorded
devising sessions with Phaedra Ensemble, as part of Sound and Music’s New Voices programme.
These were edited and fed through other AIs, neural nets and algorithms to create a prismatic,
feature-length video opera, drawing in an encyclopaedic range of influences, from British Variety
Acts and Kareoke, to noise music and speech synthesis.

Caroline Bergvall - Nattsong (live stream) from Estuary 2021.

	Nattsong (2021)
Work by Caroline Bergvall, with sound design/collaboration by Jamie Hamilton, compositional fragments by Gavin Bryars, and soprano Peyee Chen.
Nattsong is a new multi-sensory stage work in which poet–performer Caroline Bergvall takes an immersive journey into language, refuge and the night. Fusing words and music, poetry and performance, songwork and electronic projections into a singular, dreamlike and mesmerising whole. Nattsong is both personal and political – at once an immersive performance and, where feasible, a sound installation for multiple languages.

O Superman EP by Phaedra Ensemble

Activity Report (2021)For voice, guitar, strings and synth
Released 5th February 2021 on Phaedra Ensemble’s ‘O Superman EP’.Performed by Phaedra Ensemble.

Activity report features police activity digests published in local American newspapers. Each of these is a self-contained vignette of modern life; a short story broadcast as security theatre, equal parts mundane, touching, and sinister. These stories collide with slide guitar, but distorted and interrupted, like turning the dial on a radio receiver.
Guitar/Voice/Whistling - Jamie Hamilton
Violin + Viola - Phil Granell
Cello - Sergio Serra
